Hot Docs Film Festival
Beginning on April 27th, Hot Docs is North America's largest documentary festival. Every year the Canadian International Documentary Festival presents a wide selection of approximately 200
documentaries from around the world.
This year a special program called Made in Japan will be presenting 7 feature documentaries and 2 shorts. They hold contemporary and cultural content ranging from Japan's hot idol scene to the ancient art of wood block prints or Ukiyo-e. Art, history and fine cuisine are only the beginning of a fascinating view into Japanese
culture.
Your Name or 君の名は (Kimi no Na Wa) is an animatedfilm that took Japan by storm last year. Written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, the film premiered a month after the release of his novel of the same name. Your Name tells the story of a high
school girl in rural Japan and a high school boy in Tokyo who swap bodies. Coming to theaters in Toronto on April 7th, the film is available in English as well as in Japanese with English subtitles. Check show times here!
Arakurayama Sengen Park
Cherry Blossom viewing or Hanami (はなみ) season is almost upon us! If you are looking for a beautiful location to see this wonderful event this spring consider Arakurayama Sengen Park. Located in Fujiyoshida city of Yamanashi prefecture, it's situated near Mt.Fuji
allowing visitors to not only view the Sakura but also the magnificence of Japan's famous mountain. Click here to learn how to spend a full day enjoying cherry blossoms and some attractive spots in the vicinity.
Nihon Sankei
Looking for a more traditional trip this year? Visit these three locations knighted the Nihon Sankei(日本三景)! While the past couple of decades in tourist development have not enhanced these locations they have been considered three of the most outstanding sights in
Japan for centuries.
Matsushima Bay near Sendai is dotted with more than 200 islands to view and explore. Many companies offer frequent cruises that last approximately 20-25 minutes so view the pine tree covered islands.
Miyajima or "Shrine Island" is located near Hiroshima and is famous for it's huge torii gate. During high tide the gate
seems to float upon the water and is considered one of the best sights in Japan.
The Amanohashidate Sandbar or the "bridge in heaven" is a scenic pine tree covered sandbar in the beautiful coastal region of northern Kyoto Prefecture. Seen from above in the mountains or across from the bay, this sandbar is beauty to behold.
